I've seen many instances of updates on MU being reposted as 'new' but are really old updates, or updates that were released weeks or months before the posting date on MU, as if MU just got around to it or wasn't aware until much after the fact that an update was available. I know I'm not the only one who has noticed and commented on this.

I think MU relies mainly on user posts to be alerted when new updates are available. The only rational explanation I can think of as to why MU reposts old updates as new, is the argument that it is a public service to make people aware of important updates, so it triggers or comes up on peoples watch list.

But that is bogus, because for the people that already have the update, it's wasting their time to receive a notices about old updates, only to find they already have that update, and in most cases, like this one, received it AGES AGO in software time. Now, it is true HP no longer provides drivers for out of the box anymore or directly online. If you purchase an HP in the last year or so, you are instructed to visit the HP website and are guided to download the terrible HP Easy Start software, which is nothing but a downloader stub. The problem with that is the Easy Start stub not only downloads the proper driver, but then proceeds to insist on installing tons of crap ware, 'customer feedback' software aka telemetry spyware , and sign you up for the HP ink program, and so on.

Good luck trying to locate the actual downloaded driver files only if you want to keep a copy for later offline install or backup. Like 2.

Thanks for your comment - you're so right! Like 1. I've been told since I posted this, it's no big deal, just let the macOS software update detect your printer and download the necessary drivers.

Here's the problem with that; in my experience, especially with AIO or multifunction printers, macOS only downloads a generic or basic driver that allows for basic printing. Advanced features may not be supported align print heads, check supply level, 2-sided printing.

Even Apple's own Image Capture program may not detect the scanner component of the multi function printer. This is much like Windows 10, where the drivers downloaded from Microsoft based on auto detection of printers is often generic, and isn't as full featured as the manufacturer's specific drivers for the same printer. Some of them have certain means to check for updates automatically, but a lot of the applications require manual checks from time to time. This was the case with Apple HP Printer Drivers - there's nothing that could've let us know about the update at the time it came out. Later on, while doing a manual check for some of the apps we updated this one and to let our users know about it we set the date of the update to that exact day we updated it pushing this app to the top of macupdate.

Always worked for me so far. I'm glad Apple splits printer drivers by manufacturer ergo saving storage space. Here is link to HP Printer Drivers v3. I'm running OS X This is my work computer too, so I'm struggling trying to downgrade to version 2.
