Last version to support Mac OS X Introduced access to the Mac OS X spellchecker, grammar checker, address book and media browser; users of languages not supported by the Mac OS X spellchecker can use the Hunspell system originally used. It also improved support for Microsoft Word , Excel and PowerPoint documents, and for spreadsheets with Visual Basic for Applications macros that made their debut in version 2. Requires Mac OS X Added native Mac OS X text highlighting, smoother text kerning and more [14]. May 10, [15]. Patrick Luby, the main coder, has posted an explanation here.
The GPL only puts requirements on source code, not pre-built binaries - The foundation of the GPL is to ensure that anyone can access, modify, and redistribute source code. To ensure compliance with the GPL's source code requirements, we have always provided detailed instructions for accessing and compiling NeoOffice's source code here. Anyone is free to compile their own custom build We will also aggressively defend anyone's right to take our GPL source code and make a better product.
OpenOffice.org launches first native Mac OS X suite
We both started NeoOffice because we value choice and, even now, office suite options for Mac users is limited. So if someone else can produce a better product using our code as a starting code and releases their code under the GPL like we have, then everyone wins. NeoO is a high quality labor of love dedicated to the Mac community.

Commercial subscriptions software automatically locks up when your time runs out. You only pay to get the latest software for the latest hardware. MacInTouch Reader says: Checking now for updates in v 3. If it were called a payment, they'd get less. Too cynical?? Thanks to Michael Zelner and Fred Moore for the links to patch 8 for version 3. Oddly, the Download button in the Check for Updates panel of the Intel install takes me here , which only announces version 3. Deleting everything after the question mark in the URL is what gives the actual download link.
Perhaps that's one of the changes between patch 6 and patch 7 or the PPC vs Intel program since 3. I've been using it for years and think it's worth it, and I'm glad to have the competition for Microsoft. In regards to Scott Newman's post regarding "required" donations, there's certainly a difference between how an organization has to handle a "donation" versus a "fee".
I'm not a lawyer, but if the NeoOffice folks called it a fee, then they're selling a product, and they'd most likely have to set up a business, pay taxes on the income, perform bookkeeping on all transactions, etc. If they call it a "donation", then they don't have to do any of this.
Whether requiring a "donation" is legal or not, I don't know. Maybe calling it a shareware fee would solve the problem. Maybe next year I can afford a new Mac. It crashes on startup.
I went to their support page, such as it is, and followed the instructions to exclude NeoOffice from virus scanning Sophos and restarted to clear the caches. My Java is up to date, but my Java Preferences are set to use 1. I've donated occasionally to the NeoOffice project and just sent another donation.
At that rate, I'd expect actual paid support like I get from any reputable business, not just access to a user forum. With that charge, I don't think there will be much use of the forums. If it's "required" then it's not a donation. Doesn't matter what you claim - if it's voluntary then it can be a donation, if it's required then it's a "fee" or "payment" or similar.
The GPL folks will be unhappy over this. Why not take a look at LibreOffice - it's completely free. PowerPC and Intel versions too, and with updates to both platforms! I'll be migrating off NeoOffice Too cynical? Not cynical, just incorrect.

PayPal charge me a commission, even though it is a donation. Maybe they make exceptions for some registered charities, but for humble developers, we must accept they take their piece. I can understand why the developer may be frustrated by the lack of donations, but requiring them is just plain wrong. Shades of Microsoft!
Word Processing and Text Editors
Actually, after reading here about this so-called donation-ware that isn't, I went to their site yesterday and tried to find a place to contact them to ask questions. They have no support or contact method I could find except for being an owner of their program and making a so-called donation.
Could that be possibly illegal? I pay someone for something, and I have an issue with it, and I must pay them more to even get any information out of them for the product I paid for? Because that does sound illegal. It sounds like extortion for support. MacInTouch Reader wrote "In regards to Scott Newman's post regarding "required" donations, there's certainly a difference between how an organization has to handle a "donation" versus a "fee".
The IRS does not consider these donations to be gifts, they are something given in relation to a business transaction. As such they are taxable. I run a software company and collect the majority of my revenue by selling my software. I have one product I released as 'freeware' with donations accepted. I report all income equally. It is income, regardless as to how it was collected. In my case the software is fully functional and paying your donation gets you nothing more than a warm fuzzy feeling for rewarding my hard work. Neo Office runs well and opens recent versions of Word files that I would need Pages '11 to access.
Usually, at least one of the 3 "pay-as-your-conscience-dictates" Office programs will correctly open a given mis-behaving sample of these.

But, then, Preview or PhotoShop is so much better for that, that it doesn't matter. The fact is, these "Office" programs do work so well for so many different things.
