Even as it stands, the Core i3-based Mac mini is perfectly capable of performing most things a reasonably demanding desktop PC user is likely to ask of it. That said, this lowest-spec model will still likely start to struggle if you throw complex 4K video-editing projects at it.
The original Mac mini was something of a gateway drug — a simple, cheap way of enticing customers into the Mac ecosystem.
Even so, doubling the price in four years? Intel's NUC has matured significantly since it first appeared way back in from a hobbyists mini-PC to something you can run as a full-on gaming machine today.

That gives this tiny PC a surprising amount of oomph and although it's a tiny bit slower overall than the Mac Mini we've reviewed here for general tasks, it's a far more competent machine for gaming. If that's what you want, the Intel NUC is a decent alternative choice. Just bear in mind you'll have to add your own RAM, storage and operating system software so the overall cost will increase from the base price shown here.

This is not unexpected given the third-gen Core chips' native support for USB 3. The Mac Mini's HDMI-out is no longer all that exotic, but that along with the discrete digital audio output continues to make this an enticing living-room PC. Final notes: The new Mac Mini has the same underside-accessible memory access as the previous models.
Simply spin off the large plastic disc and you get access. Because it hosts the operating system, Fusion's impact extends across the Mac Mini's day-to-day functions. It also dramatically speeds up on-system file transfers, and should improve file load times, depending on the application. I wish Apple also gave you manual control of the file locations. Apple critics will chime in now with the usual overcharging accusations. They have a point. On balance, Fusion doesn't dramatically improve the Mac Mini experience so much that that it breaks out of luxury feature territory for casual Mac users.
It would, however, make a useful upgrade for professionals or enthusiasts with serious data access demands. Yes, it would lose some of its pep without the Fusion drive, but this is still the most competitively configured Mac Mini that Apple has ever sold. I will continue to press the company for one, because I'm eager to see its performance.

Unlike other tiny desktops that set up vertically, the Mac mini sticks with the low horizontal design it has used for years. On the top is a glossy black Apple logo; on the bottom is a round black plastic hatch. It can be opened without any tools, giving you a limited view of the internals, and only providing real access to a few specific components see below. RAM modules can be added and swapped, and the fan removed for cleaning — although the rest of the components can be accessed, you need to have the necessary tools and a lot of patience. Apple has beefed up several features in the new Mac mini.

The processor has been upgraded to the latest Ivy Bridge technology, and our review unit was outfitted with a 2. Apple's Fusion Drive combines hard disk and flash storage — Apple's nomenclature for both solid-state drives and custom flash modules — but it's neither a hybrid drive, nor is it a traditional dual drive.
Instead of there being two drive volumes to manage which can be a nuisance for the tech savvy, and downright mystifying for others , the Mac mini presents the two drives as one volume. As far as managing your files and programs goes, that's all you need to know, because the Fusion Drive software does the rest.
