Ethnocentric by Typodermic Fonts. I'm sure there are a lot of other ways to reproduce a vector-based font, but Illustrator is the only one I know. I don't have that program anymore for my Mac, but I keep thinking about getting it again.
My last copy is Illustrator 8, though, and it's not eligible for the cheap upgrade. Technically, recreating MasterCraft's font would be a violation of their copyright. Whether they'd go after you for doing that I wonder about HemiHead Most of the boat lettering places use that for MasterCraft numbers and letters because it's close, and the font is free -- they don't have to pay any licensing fees to MasterCraft or the person that created the font. But the two fonts are so close HemiHead or the MasterCraft font.
Is the MasterCraft font a derivative of HemiHead?

Vice Versa? Same font creator? I think I might go without numbers for a while longer. I want to see if my graphic design friends from college can mess with it for a while to get a closer match than HemiHead. I am a little lost though where to find a capital "U" and a number "6" in MC font, but, then, if I can have my friends throw it together in illistrator and take it to my buddy with the vinyl cutter I would have a very close match!
I have no doubt that any graphic designer would be able to do that with no problem. They would also likely be able to fill in the missing letters with something that matches the rest. Download the HemiHead font into your Mac from here: It's a place to start. I wasn't necessarily saying you're wrong Mac. There are several potential legal issues involved and a business would be well-advised to tread carefully before marketing and selling "Mastercraft" items. As for registration number decals: Trademark violation? I doubt it though MC may want to exercise some common law trademark rights in the "decals" class of goods and services.
Copyright violation?

More likely, but I'm not sure Mastercraft's "proprietary" font includes all the letters of the alphabet other than the "M", "a", "s", etc I don't believe Mastercraft has a copyright registration in the font search the Copyright Office's database , though registration is not necessary for copyright to exist - just a prerequisite for a legal action. Less likely, I hope, is that Mastercraft would go after a shop that custom-makes a set of decals for an individual Mastercraft owner who wants to put them on his Mastercraft boat.
As you imply below, Mastercraft isn't Harley. I agree, there's a signifcant practical issue here. I can't imagine MasterCraft making the effort to go after anyone for copying their font for the purpose of registration numbers. Maybe they would if someone started selling MasterCraft T-shirts, or actual "MasterCraft" stickers in quantity, but not for a one-off.
The problem would be getting Joe to do it, because it is technically against the law. IOW, I could see them getting proprietary about their logo, but not their font. I do assume that MasterCraft has an actual font, but in many cases that font belongs to the graphic artist that works for their advertising company or to the advertising company itself, and is copyrighted by them. That's the case with my company's logo - the lettering is a modification of Palatino. I was doing some web site work and every time I'd need that font, I'd have to tell the the graphic artist what words I wanted - he wouldn't give me the whole font.
I finally modified Palatino myself using Illustrator so I'd have the whole alphabet in any size I needed. Nah, I agree it would likely not be a trademark violation - I think a key element of that is that it would have to "create marketing confusion" about the product and who made it. The name "MasterCraft" is trademarked, the logo is copyrighted. In our case, we actually license the font from the graphic artist and have its exclusive use. He lets us use it for whatever we want, but he actually holds the copyright.

By copying the font and using it to make T-shirts or websites, I'm technically guilty of copyright infringement on the font , but not trademark violation since it's my company. The shaded graphic upped the price, but I wanted it yellow and needed the contrast against the white. I could see getting dinged by the DNR for lack of contrast.
My only suggestion is that selecting "bold" before cutting the vinyl would give a font stroke closer to the MasterCraft logo, and I wish I'd done that. The other thing is that color matching was problematic. At the graphics place, I looked at several rolls of yellow vinyl before I found the shade that matched the gelcoat on my boat. The color choice was my main reason for not using Domednumbers. Here's some samples I like the shadowed letters you have Mac. I finally got my boat registered so will be needing new numbers.
Font release note
I may email you Farmer Ted when I decide what I want. Shep, I'm going to buy one of those DIY dome kits, I've got some Chrome that would look sweet as the outside and black as the inside for your ride. The only way the chrome would work is with the resin over it as it's only outdoor durable up to 1 year.
With the dome resin on it, it would be unlimited. Have to send this one to the lab first Sounds great! I'll hold off for now. My intention is to see how long I can get away without having any numbers, but I know I'll eventually have to get some. I just met a guy on our lake with a Malibu whose doing the same no-numbers thing.
Let me know how it works out. Well, after getting dinked hard by the Sherriff's department in Arizona, I decided I had better hurry up and get something put on. I still want to get an exact match, but my buddies were lagging on getting it done for me, so I did the domednumbers.
