You should be able to put the cursor in a misbehaving paragraph and hit Command-Option-Q, which is the default shortcut.

If that keyboard shortcut does not work for you, you will need to dig the ResetPara command out of the Customize dialogs in order to access it. It may be easier to use the code in the next option. If changing each paragraph individually is not feasible, you can use a small piece of code to reset the document automatically. The code will reset the outline level of every paragraph to the outline level that is set in the style. It does not affect any other formatting.
Fix the Document Map
The script has not yet been tested in Word , but might work. Double-click to open the script in Script Editor. Click Run in Script Editor—but first make sure your document is the frontmost document in Word, or preferably, close all other documents. Although this script is unlikely to do any harm, you may wish to test it on a copy of your document the first time.
