I have tried the sugestinos here and I am still having problems using Image Capture and on new 27" iMac.
Image Capture connects with the my OfficeJet and works perfectly. Other apps like Preview and Pixelmator can scan from the printer with out any problem. It is only Image Capture that is having problems.

I have reached a stumbling block as with my printer Officejet En-z after double clicking on the printer icon I get a small "box" and all it has is :. If you click on scanner it starts the scan which appears in TIF and covered in black lines so useless.
HP Easy Scan will have to suffice. When I finally decided to upgrade to OS X Yosemite, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could still print with my LaserJet which is a printer only; does not scan or make copies. I didn't have to do anything further to get it to work, as the drivers I had installed to get it to work with Mavericks still worked with Yosemite.
Ok, Ive being trouble shooting two hacks, printer malfunctions, 1 disk repair, etc over the last months my Mac for the last two days, I successfully restored Mac OSX I didnt know the utility was phased out when I upgraded to Yosemite and this was hogging my CPU with looping processing that was killing my Mac I call her Alice!
