I have the same question John McGhie Replied on July 28, In Word , there is no separate command. When you insert a drawing object, the Drawing Canvas is created automatically. However, the bad news is that you will see that MOST of the capability for drawing has been removed from Word I agree with you, in normal corporate work, I can find no use for the stuff in the SmartArt tab, but I use the old drawing tools constantly.
What you will find is that you can draw your pictures in PowerPoint, which uses the same graphics engine. PowerPoint presents the controls better, and places the Arrange menu, where you can find the rest of the drawing tools, on the Home tab. The "Group" command will appear on the Arrange menu when you have multiple objects selected.
The Graphics Cursor white arrow has gone too: the normal cursor will enable drag-selection of graphic objects.
