MacMini audio out - Optical-S/PDIF?
On older Macs, the headphone jack and the internal speakers are essentially separate ports on a single output device and only one of these ports is allowed to be active at a time. Because of this, audio can be sent to either the built-in speakers or the headphone jack, but not to both. As well, if anything is connected to the headphone jack, the OS shuts off the built-in speaker completely. With T2 Macs, there are actually two distinct output devices. The headphone jack and the internal speakers are separate devices, completely independent from one another.
Now, contrast this with older Mac models that allowed only one of these ports to be active at a time. If you own a Mac with the T2 security chip , you can simultaneously send audio to both the built-in speakers and your headphones connected to the 3.

MacBook speakers off, red light coming from the headphone jack - Ask Different
Dell have been unable to explai. It should work as we both have described. Look for some kind of menu on the Dell that would switch inputs from the DIN connection to the Audio-input connection, 5. Verify that you're using the correct connections for both the Mac mini and the Dell. For the Mac mini, it's the one with the icon of the headphones, for the Dell, it's the one labeled in diagram as 5. Thanks again.
I will try the jack connection again with a new cable in case the one I have is faulty. I will let you know how I get on! Owners manual: Yes, I had already downloaded this. I will let you know if the new cable works.

You are being very helpful! This particular Dell monitor has a speaker which fits into the stand and attaches to the monitor with a built in 5 pin mini din cable. Dell seem to think that the speaker will only work via an HDMI connection, but this is not what their booklet says. I know this model of Macmini will.
Well the Dell monitor clearly has an Audio input jack, it must be usable, but the configuration is probably defaulted to the DIN. It should work that way, so that folks using the VGA input can also connect to and use the speaker.
