I decided to get the V since it comes with SilverFast and I have never regretted it. Having used it for several months, I went for the Ai Studio upgrade and a target. The reason being that I always had trouble with i1 and in SilverFast the IT8 calibration works automatically. I can definitely recommend both, scanner and software, unconditionally. It is fantastic!
It was like getting a whole new scanner for the price of the upgrade. I have since upgraded to the Ai Studio version.
John R. While looking into upgrading with a new board or switch out completely to a New Window 7 Professional it became evident that I would have to make the big switch to a new replacement. I am heavily loaded with XP software so I was concerned about which software would have to be upgraded as well. For instance, in Windows, you get a thumbnail view of four slides when you preview. You can rotate them, select all or any combination of the four for scanning. The linux version only gives you a view of the four slides the preview is more like the preview of the entire underside of the slide tray. You have to manually select the area you want to scan, which means you have to select each slide separately and scan it one at a time.

I suppose you could scan the entire strip and then crop afterward, but my guess is that you would be compromising resolution in that case - perhaps not. You cannot rotate ahead of time,either. But those are minor inconveniences compared with having to switch into Windows to scan photos. Caruso Caruso.

Many's the time that some functions in the linux drivers are totally absent or non-functional compared to the winbloze drivers. This is NOT the fault of linux or the generous, hard-working folks that donate their valuable time to port said drivers to function in linux; it is the fault of the manufacturers, many of which are so ensconced maybe sometimes extorted with Microsoft that they totally ignore the millions of people, worldwide, who choose to use a "better" OS.
