Remove empty directories 1. Left the problem overnight and opened the camera as a mass storage device again on the WIndows PC. This time it declared that the camera storage was formatted as plain old FAT!! I now have a camera that won't talk with the Mac or iPhone app. Any ideas on how to format the camera storage successfully please? This is two cameras I have 'lost' now - with the same problem. I believe it is due to deleting images via the Mac, but Ricoh Support don't appear to have a Mac with which to check things out - in fact I have read elsewhere that they don't even have a Ricoh Theta S to 'play with'.

DCF specification is published by ISO and includes definitions of the directory structure, file naming convention, character set and file format. The file format in DCF is based on the specifications Exchangeable image file format recorded in the Exif 2. Can they recreate the DCF filesystem? I'm not going to try this on the camera I'm using, so I don't know the answer.
There may be some type of defect with your camera.

The first idea came to mind without googling was to reformat the internal memory. You all know what happened next, I ended up with 57 MB left on it and every time I turned it on, it beeps and the status light turned red. After poking around, I realized 1 thing, the reason that it turned into 57 MB is because the Theta can not recognize the newly formatted micro SD card inside and switch to its fixed memory.
This is why the red light is on, the online manual did not mention this situation. I eventually fixed it by following Roberto Leone's well documented tutorial mentioned above and replaced the original micro SD card 8G with a brand new HC one 16G.
